Sapphire rain falls flat from a limpid sky as August dawns falter
towards September dusks. Shadows are still and fuzzy on the
silver pavement pounded by weekend joggers decked out in
Sweaty Betty: all firmly attached to their arm pedometers. Pony
tails swing, cyclists pass and splash and labradoodles bound
and ‘fetch’. Municipal flower beds are watered for the last time
this summer, soon to be dug over and laid to rest till next
spring.
